CAMBRIDGE — There’s scarcely enough room for the band on a recent Friday night at the Lizard Lounge, and that’s before it even takes the stage. The cozy club is nearly full, and when the eight members of Zili Misik cluster around their instruments, it’s clear that their music and stage presence would feel outsize even in an arena.Zili Misik - which derives its name from Ezili, a spiritual entity from the country that gives the band its heartbeat, Haiti - is unlike any other act in Boston. From its visual aesthetic (members often match in elegant white linen) to its pan-global palette to its rallying cry for social justice, the band offers a feast for the senses. A trombone and saxophone might blare in tandem as an electric guitar cuts into the mix, before the group’s leader, tossing her long dreadlocks that tumble halfway down her back, takes the lead on hand drums.The last thing you’d probably notice, or at least dwell on, is also the most obvious: Zili Misik is made up exclusively of female musicians representing various ethnicities. The Gophers didn’t shave their heads to make a bold fashion statement before the Border Battle.
They cut their hair to show support for junior forward Paul Carter, whose 13-year-old sister recently was diagnosed with cancer.
That gesture ultimately provided solidarity and inspiration during the Gophers’ 68-52 upset victory over the No. 14 Badgers Thursday night at Williams Arena.
"Just everyone coming, getting their hair cut, everyone has the same look … guys were excited about it," said Devoe Joseph, who had 10 points and five rebounds. "We’re doing it for a reason."
Gophers coach Tubby Smith said the shaved heads expressed the unity his team needed: "That may be something we need to bond us together."
The lungs of an announced sellout crowd of 14,625 helped, too. The Gophers (15-10, 6-7 Big Ten) played seven road games over the past month.
The victory was their third consecutive over Wisconsin and their first home win over a top-15 opponent since a Feb. 11, 2006, victory against then-No. 12 Michigan State.
Perhaps more important, Smith’s team got the victory in front of some of Minnesota’s top high school players, a consistent part of Wisconsin’s recruiting strategy each year.
The Gophers showed poise down the stretch, a missing link when they blew a 13-point lead during an overtime loss at Northwestern on Sunday.
Although the Gophers took a 35-26 lead into halftime and extended the edge to 13 points on a Blake Hoffarber three-pointer at the start of the second half –sound familiar? — their defensive lapses allowed the Badgers to get back into the game.
Midway through the second half, Wisconsin’s Jason Bohannon hit a three-pointer that cut the Gophers’ lead to 45-42.

Phantogram, the Saratoga Springs duo of Sarah Barthel and Josh Carter, had planned on releasing a record locally and moving to New York City in hopes of being discovered.

Instead, a national indie label in Seattle discovered their music online, and now Barthel and Carter have corporate backing for the release Tuesday of their 11-song CD “Eyelid Movies” and a national tour they hope will last all year.Before embarking upon that tour, Phantogram plays tonight at Northern Lights in what will probably be its last Capital Region performance for months, Carter says. Barsuk Records, which signed the duo last fall, is coordinating a tour in which Phantogram will headline shows in the U.S. and Canada.”We’re expecting to be on tour the entire year,” Carter says. “It’s really wild.”They’re surprised at having achieved this much success so soon, they say. They’ve been playing music together for only three years, although they started hanging out together at Greenwich High School. Barthel is 26, and Carter 27.They live in an apartment in Saratoga Springs, and until recently Barthel was waiting tables at a downtown restaurant. WASHINGTON
- Embattled Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke won confirmation for a second term Thursday, but only by the closest vote ever for the crucial post and after withering criticism from lawmakers for bailing out Wall Street while other Americans suffered in recession.
The Senate confirmed Bernanke for a new four-year term by a 70-30 vote, a seemingly solid majority but 14 votes worse than the closest previous vote for a Fed chairman.
President Barack Obama hailed the Senate’s action and praised Bernanke’s "wisdom and steady leadership."
The battle over Bernanke’s confirmation has been a test of central bank independence, a crucial element if the Fed is to carry out unpopular but economically essential policies. Its decisions on interest rates can have immense consequences, from the success or failure of the largest companies to the typical home-buyer’s ability to get an affordable loan to the price of cereal at the grocery or gas at the corner station.
Created by Congress in 1913 after a series of bank panics, the Federal Reserve is an independent agency, supposedly outside politics, but its chairman is typically assailed by lawmakers and others when the economy falls and jobless ranks lengthen.
"Bernanke fiddled while our markets burned," huffed Richard Shelby, of Alabama, the top Republican on the Senate Banking Committee, during Thursday’s debate. "Ben Bernanke’s Federal Reserve played a key role in setting the stage for the financial crisis."
Shelby and other opponents blame Bernanke for failing to spot problems leading up to the crisis, for lax bank regulation and for not cracking down on dubious home mortgage practices. All those missteps contributed to the recession, they contend.
Supporters see it far differently, crediting him with preventing the Great Recession from turning into the second Great Depression.
